If you place everything you are saving into one type of investment then you stand a chance of losing everything you are working for if that investment goes sour. You will want to place a percentage of the money you have available to set aside in a 401K program if that option is available to you.

You will also want to place some money into an IRA that will be tax exempt for you and you will want to purchase some things like savings bonds and certificates of deposit that grow more slowly than the other types of investments, but they also have less risk involved. You will receive Social Security when you reach retirement age but the amount you are going to get will not be very much and should actually be considered as just extra money you will have each month rather than considered as something you will rely on completely.
